Silottuen, kuluen (Smoothing, Wearing)
24 June – 30 September 2022: Öres22 Summer exhibition, Örö island
Collaboration work with Tuuli Malla & Mari Mäkiö
Silottuen, kuluen (Smoothing, Wearing) is a video work, shot during one week residency at Öres artist residency in November 2022. The work is based on collaboration between Japanese calligrapher Yukina Yamamoto, performance artist Tuuli Malla and artist Mari Mäkiö. It consists of stones borrowed from the shores of the Örö island and Yamamoto’s calligraphy written with water to the surfaces of the stones. In the video japanese character 人/ hito/ human appears and disappears creating a meditative contemplation of the layers of time. The work was also inspired by the environment of the Örö island and it’s past as a military fortress.
The video work was part of Öres 2022, summer exhibition organized at the island and was shown together with a leaflet “Kutsuja liikkeeseen saaren kanssa (invitations to Move with the Island)”. The leaflet’s poems were written by Malla and calligraphy was done by Yamamoto. The design and implementation was done by Mäkiö. The work was numbered 100 leaflets that visitors could take with them from the exhibition. The works were exhibited at an old canteen of the military employees.
